What Roof Material is Best for Your Climate?

Your roof doesn’t exist in a vacuum — it lives in your specific climate, facing whatever that climate throws at it year after year. Wind, rain, snow, heat, hail, humidity — different environments demand different things from a roofing system, and choosing a material that’s suited to your conditions can make a real difference in how long your roof lasts.

In areas prone to severe weather — high winds, frequent storms, or hail — impact-resistant shingles are worth serious consideration. These shingles are engineered with reinforced construction to resist damage from impact and are rated on a scale from Class 1 to Class 4, with Class 4 being the highest impact resistance. In many regions, choosing a Class 4 shingle can even result in a discount on your homeowner’s insurance premium.

Hot, sunny climates benefit from roofing materials that reflect solar heat rather than absorbing it. Lighter-colored shingles, cool roof coatings, and reflective metal roofing can all reduce the amount of heat transferred into the attic, lowering cooling costs over time. Some shingle lines from Owens Corning and GAF include solar-reflective granules specifically designed for this purpose.

In cold climates with significant snow and ice, proper underlayment and ice-and-water shield become especially important. Ice dams — ridges of ice that form at the eaves and cause water to back up under shingles — are a major source of roof damage in northern regions. A properly designed and installed roof system accounts for this from the start.

High-humidity climates introduce the risk of algae and moss growth, which can degrade shingles over time. Algae-resistant shingles treated with copper granules address this issue directly.
