Should you replace your roof before installing Solar?

Over the years, this is probably the most asked question we receive during the solar process.

It really boils down to dollars and cents and you have to evaluate your particular situation.

It basically boils down to a few things:

1. When was the roof last replaced?

I am not talking about repaired or capped. I mean brand new roof installed?

Whether you have flat roof or shingles roof, doesnt matter….you have to evaluate the current condition of the roof.

2. Current Condition

The whole idea of going solar is to reduce your outlay in the long run.

So we have to take a close look at the current condition of the roof in order to determine if it makes sense to change or replace it todays dollars rather than wait.

3. Solar Panel Removal Cost

Many property owners do not realize that in order to change or replace the roof in the future, it will cost a ton of money to remove and reinstall the solar panels

8 years ago we advised them to replace the roof that was at that time 10 years old.

They choose not to and the solar panels were installed

Then, they started getting leaks as we knew they would and they decided to replace the roof 8 years later…..this week are doing the job for them

The cost difference in changing the roof 8 years ago versus todays cost was almost 50% more due to inflation.

Cost $27,000 more to replace the roof opposed to doing it 8 years ago!!!

Then you have to factor in the cost to remove and reinstall the solar panels.

200 panels at $150 per panel= $30,000

So it cost them an additional $57,000 to replace the roof by waiting!!
