Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) 

R-Value: R-5 per inch

One popular type of roof insulation that you may have heard of is rigid board insulation. Under this, there are two types, one of them being the XPS system. 

Extruded polystyrene, or XPS, insulation is renowned for its durability and resistance to moisture. It is an ideal choice for flat roofs that may be exposed to damp or humid conditions. This is because a closed-cell structure prevents water absorption and ensures your insulation remains effective over time. 

XPS insulation retains its thermal efficiency even in the presence of moisture, making it a reliable option for long-term performance. However, you need to take extra care of it under certain conditions like extreme heat. 

XPS insulation is commonly used for cold roof insulation systems. However, you can use it for warm roof insulation as well. You’ll also find that this insulation is best suited for single-ply membrane roofing systems such as TPO and/or EPDM

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) 

R-Value: R-4 to R-4.5 per inch

Polyisocyanurate (PIR)

R-Value: R-6 to R-6.5 per inch

Polyisocyanurate insulation has many names. You may have heard the name polyiso or PIR used instead, but they all mean the same thing. This insulation is a top choice for flat roofs due to its exceptional thermal performance. It boasts a high R-value, meaning it provides excellent insulation with a relatively thin profile. PIR insulation is available in various forms, including rigid panels and spray foam. It offers outstanding fire resistance, making it a safe option for your flat roof. PIR insulation is commonly used in both cool and warm roof insulation setups, where it helps maintain a comfortable indoor environment.

Mineral Wool 

R-Value: R-4.5 per inch 

This flat roof insulation is an environmentally friendly option made from natural materials like rock or slag. It offers excellent thermal and acoustic insulation properties, making it suitable for both temperature regulation and noise reduction. Mineral wool insulation is also highly fire-resistant and does not promote mold growth. 

Due to its malleable nature, you’ll find that mineral wool insulation can be expertly layered to create gradual slopes helping to create tapered insulation. This makes it a safe and effective choice for flat roof applications.
