After a storm causes roof damage, one of the most important conversations you’ll have is with your insurance adjuster. How you handle that interaction can have a real impact on the outcome of your claim — so it pays to go in prepared.
Before the adjuster arrives, gather your documentation. This means photos of all visible damage, the date and nature of the storm, and any weather reports or alerts from that time period. If you’ve already had a roofer look at the damage, have their assessment in hand as well.
When the adjuster visits, be present. Walk through the property with them and point out every area of damage you’re aware of. Don’t assume they’ll find everything on their own — adjusters inspect many properties and can miss things, especially on complex roofs with multiple penetrations or in areas that aren’t immediately obvious from ground level.
Be factual and stick to the documented damage. You don’t need to argue or be confrontational, but you do need to be thorough. If the adjuster seems to be downplaying the scope of damage, you’re entitled to ask questions and request clarification on how they arrived at their assessment.
One of the most valuable things you can do is have your roofing contractor present during the adjuster’s inspection. A contractor who knows what to look for can point out hail strikes on soft metals like flashing and gutters, patterns of granule loss consistent with impact damage, and other technical details that support the claim.
If you believe the initial assessment was too low, you have the right to request a re-inspection or to bring in a public adjuster — an independent professional who advocates on your behalf.
At GenSun Roofing, we have extensive experience working alongside homeowners through the insurance process. We document damage carefully, communicate professionally with adjusters, and help ensure the full scope of damage is captured. You don’t have to navigate this alone.
