If you’ve never had a roof replaced before, the day it happens can feel like a lot of activity descending on your home all at once. Knowing what to expect from start to finish takes the mystery out of it and helps you feel prepared.
The crew typically arrives early in the morning — often by 7 or 8 a.m. — to make the most of daylight hours. The first order of business is setup: positioning the dumpster, unloading material deliveries, and laying out protective tarps around the base of the house to catch falling debris and protect your landscaping.
Tearoff comes next. The crew removes the existing roofing material down to the decking — the wooden boards that form the structural base of your roof. This is the loudest part of the day. Once the old material is stripped, the decking is inspected for soft spots, rot, or water damage. Any sections that need to be replaced are addressed at this stage.
With a clean, solid deck, the installation begins. Synthetic underlayment goes down first as a protective layer across the entire roof surface. Ice-and-water shield is then installed along the eaves, in the valleys, around any penetrations, at the rakes, and wherever the roof meets a vertical wall — these are the areas most vulnerable to water intrusion.
Next comes the shingles themselves — in GenSun’s case, either Owens Corning or GAF products. Flashing is installed or replaced around chimneys, vents, and other penetrations. Hip and ridge cap shingles finish the peaks and edges of the roof.
Cleanup is the final step before the crew leaves. Magnets are run along the ground around the house to pick up stray nails, debris is cleared, and a final walkthrough is conducted.
By end of day, your home has a complete new roof and the jobsite looks clean. At GenSun Roofing, we take the process seriously from first shingle to final sweep — because our name is on every roof we install.
